In addition to the task force’s efforts, the nonprofit Living Streets Alliance is pushing for new policies to benefit walkers.

Residents often request shady trees, lower speed limits and improved sidewalks in their neighborhoods, but “those sorts of improvements very rarely happen in our community,” said Emily Yetman, the organization’s executive director.
