Jane Jacobs Walk – Spring 2015
April 4, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am| FREE
A Jane Jacobs Walk is a free neighborhood walking, biking, and/or transit tour that celebrates and investigates the people and places that make a city great. Jane Jacobs Walk events are street level celebrations of author and urban activist Jane Jacobs’ legacy. These self-organized walks and discussions combine exploring and observing neighborhoods while sharing their urban history and local lore. The purpose is to get people out of their cars and onto their city streets and sidewalks to reconnect with each other and rediscover their communities.
LSA hosted the first Jane Jacobs Walk of Tucson back in November with the participation of over 50 people from all across town. We heard how much you enjoyed the event, so we’re gearing up for a second one this spring!
This walking conversation will explore the connections between fine-grained urban infill development, historic preservation, walkable neighborhoods, and economic vitality. All participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts and insights. The walk will be co-led by Architect/Planner/LSA Board Member Corky Poster, City of Tucson Preservation Lead Planner Jennifer Levstik, and LSA staff.
Hope you join us in this event to engage in a lively discussion, meet new people, and celebrate urban life on two feet! See date and time in our “events” section below and follow the facebook event page for announcements.
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building, rooted in the importance of residents having input on how their neighborhoods develop. Her 1961 treatise, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail, that now seem like common sense to generations of architects, planners, politicians and activists.
Meantime, here’s a wonderful way to boost your urban planning savvy before the walk. We’ll be passing right by Antigone Books who are offering a 20% discount to LSA Members on the these two titles through April. You can even pop in and grab your copy during the walk! (Not a member yet? Not to worry, you can sign up here or fill out a mail-in membership form at Antigone Books.)
And our wonderful business member Exo Roast Co is extending its 10% LSA member discount to all of the Jane Jacobs Walk participants on April 4. We’ll end the walk right at their doorstep, so it’s the perfect time to have a cup of their delicious coffee! Exo’s owner Amy Smith will be joining us to talk about their exciting plans for Tucson’s first parklet right outside their shop.
