Urban Living Ride: Bikes & Baseball
June 25, 2011 @ 5:00 pm - 10:30 pm| $6.50 general admission to the game
We won’t actually play ball, but we will watch the new Tucson Padres take on the Fresno Grizzlies on a Saturday night. We’ll meet at 5pm at Old Main Fountain on the University or Arizona campus and take an adventurous route down to Kino Stadium, get tickets, grab a bag of peanuts, and enjoy the ball game (which starts at 7pm). After the game and a spectacular fireworks show we’ll head home and marvel in the beautiful summer night.
Bikes and baseball… it’s a match made in heaven!

The Living Streets Alliance hosts its most ambitious “Urban Living Ride” to date: Bikes and Baseball. Join us for an adventurous bike commute from downtown Tucson to Kino Stadium (formerly Tucson Electric Park), a beautiful baseball facility constructed to accommodate spring training baseball through March, and entertain our city with Cactus League baseball through the summer. On Saturday, June 25th, the Tucson Padres take on the Fresno Grizzlies, with a fireworks display following the game.
Inter-connectivity from Tucson’s urban core to the places where we live, play and work – that’s at the heart of this exploratory ride. We’re not pulling any punches here: This ride is not a family ride and therefore not recommended for children. That said, this is an excellent opportunity to gauge the potential to do this ride-activity with friends and family in the future. It’s an experiment. Are you adventurous?
Meeting and Departure:
We will meet at 5pm at the University of Arizona Old Main Fountain and depart at 5:30 pm for our 45-minute ride to Kino Stadium, and plan to arrive at 6:15pm, 45 minutes before game time. We’ll have mini Clif Bars for everyone who attends.
General admission tickets are $6.50, which you buy for yourself. They are for the open grass area in the outfield. We’re planning an early arrival because a Saturday night game followed by fireworks guarantees a crowd. We’ll stand in line at the box office at the south end of the field for tickets.
Our ride will leave UofA, proceed west on University and south on 4th Avenue, along S. Toole > Euclid > 18th > Warehouse > Cherry > Fairland Stravenue >Forges and through Las Vistas and the preservation area, past the practice fields, over the Ajo bicycle/pedestrian overpass – a dramatic entry – and down into the outfield of the ballpark. Total mileage is about 6.5 miles. The game begins at 7pm followed by fireworks immediately afterward (approximately 9:30pm). We’ll gauge interest at the time as to whether or not we want to skip the fireworks, as they might make a nice backdrop to our departure and ride home. We’ll ride the same route back north with one minor change.

Our group leader will be Jason Repko. A seasoned city rider, he’s consulted with Pima County and City of Tucson Bicycle & Pedestrian Program coordinators, and ridden this route twice. He’ll be riding it again before the 25th to solidify the route. You can contact Jason at Jason@kxci.org with questions.
Know Before You Go:
-You must be comfortable with a very minor amount of traffic. Surprisingly, this ride is very low key, however…
-This ride requires familiarity with navigating intersections. We will cross a handful of intersections – nothing too major – where we will stop beforehand to gather and proceed as a group.
-You need a spirit of group participation. We strongly encourage “doubling up” with someone for the northern end of the ride. Strength in numbers! We’ll ride a very leisurely pace, and want to keep a fairly intact group for the journey.
-You must be okay riding 13+ miles. That is the mileage from UofA to Kino Stadium and back. Add more for your route home.
-Check your bike! Make sure your brakes are adjusted properly, your tires are inflated, your shifting is sound. We will have spare tubes, pumps and tools. Meet us early at UofA if you need help, and/or take your bike for a quick check to your local bike shop the week before the ride.
-You must have front and rear lights. A small amount of spares will be provided.
-Bring water. We’ll bring extra.
-Bring a light wind-breaker for the ride home.
-Bring a $20-spot. This will cover your ticket, a hot dog, a beer and a water at the ballpark.
