Amphi Bloom: A Community-Led Traffic Calming Installation
On Saturday, September 5th, LSA hosted a traffic-calming installation Block Party with the Amphi neighborhood, celebrating the bright and beautiful artwork of Amphi artist Marwa Malikzada.
This installation was a year in the making. After identifying traffic safety as a neighborhood priority last summer, youth from the Amphi Women and Girls Union spent this summer leading community walk audits, learning about different traffic-calming solutions, and shaping the design. Their work ultimately produced a mural-centered traffic circle and several chicanes at the intersection of Navajo Road and Fontana Avenue.
This was a true community-fueled effort, made possible with support from the Pima County Health Department and several community partners: PSOMAS, Speedy Striping, Tucson Clean and Beautiful, Tucson Refugee Ministry, the City of Tucson’s Ward 3 Council Office, and The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona.

The following Mobile Bike Repair clinics are scheduled in partnership with area schools. If your family attends one of these schools, make sure to contact the front office to reserve your slot! Celebrate Walk 'n' Roll October with Pima County
Pima County schools join thousands of schools around the country to encourage walking and rolling throughout the school year in celebration of National Walk & Bike to School. Students from participating schools in Pima County who walk or roll to school during the week will receive fun gifts, including Walk 'N' Roll reflective stickers, Pima County Bicycle & Pedestrian Program mood pencils, and the chance to win the grand prize - a scooter (elementary and middle schools) or a HydroFlask (high schools)!

Webinar: From Dangerous by Design to Walkable Streets: Addressing America's Road Safety Challenges
Nearly 40,000 people were killed on America’s roads in 2024, including over 7,000 struck and killed while walking. On Wednesday, September 23rd at 11am PST, join America Walks for a webinar on achieving long-term systems changes for road safety through near-term wins. Heidi Simon, Director of Thriving Communities at Smart Growth America (SGA), will provide an overview of the landscape, including a dive into SGA’s landmark report “Dangerous By Design” (2026).

Article: El Paso traffic deaths drop 36% since 2023, outpacing national decline, city says
Since adopting a Vision Zero policy in July, 2023, El Paso has seen a dramatic decrease in traffic fatalities that far outnumbers the national average of 10% decline. As El Paso Mayor Renard U. Johnson says, “Vision Zero gives us a data-driven approach to identify where we can make our streets safer and invest resources where they can have the greatest impact. Our goal is to continue building a transportation system that is safer for everyone.”

Personal Essay: The Bus As A Holy Place
Unitarian Universalist ministor Althea Atherton shares a beautifully-written piece on the public bus as a place of justice, transformation, equity, pluralism, generosity, and interdependence - with love at the center. As she beings this piece, "When I feel disconnected with myself, my values, or my community, I find any excuse I can to take the bus. I take the bus so I can feel like a tiny part of a living and breathing city again."
